Window Sills
Internal sills – also known as those ledges at the bottom of your windows – have a dual function: first of all, their purpose is to make your windows more energy-efficient, by keeping cold out and the heat in. As well as finishing off the window structurally, they can also be a wonderfully distinctive decorative feature.
Although you can buy them in a variety of materials, internal cills are often made from wood. We think natural stone is a fantastic choice. Not only does it add character to a room, but stone is also an excellent substitute for timber: it’s hardwearing, light in colour and non-perishable.
A Sustainable Solution for Internal Sills
Wood is quite vulnerable to water damage so if you’re thinking of using your internal window sill as a home for plants, bear this in mind. Direct exposure from the sun will also have an impact on wood – and if your surface is painted, this too can have a tendency to fade. Natural stone is a much more resilient option. You can choose from different kinds of stone – limestone, marble and granite are all popular. Among the advantages are its durability and resistance to moisture damage. It’s also easy to clean, a very low maintenance choice and won’t be affected by sunlight in the same way that wood or paint is.
Window Sills That Suit The Way You Live
Natural stone brings design flexibility, too. To keep these areas child friendly, we can add bevel or bullnose edging to your preferred stone. You can match it up with flooring or skirting and choose from an aged or honed finish. All we need is a template!
