Our Quarries
Our limestone doesn’t have to travel far. Clipsham Medwells and Clipsham Bidwell quarries are both on the famous Lincolnshire limestone belt with reserves guaranteed for the next 30 years. Owning the quarries that supply us with this wonderful, natural material gives us great flexibility and control.
As people care more about provenance and sustainability, it’s good to be able to share our story with them and reassure customers that our locally quarried stone is an ethical choice.
What is special about our Clipsham stone?
Clipsham stone is similar to both Portland stone and Bath stone in that they’re all what’s known as oolitic limestones formed during the Jurassic age. Clipsham comes from the Upper Lincolnshire Limestone Formation, where rocks formed in sub-tropical seas 168 million years ago. Quarried since Roman times, it comes with pedigree, having been used in iconic buildings including York Minster, the Houses of Parliament and King’s College Chapel in Cambridge. It’s a beautiful stone with a consistent warm colour, traditionally used for masonry but also perfect for copings and cornices.
Investing in the future of local limestone
We’re delighted to be able to safeguard the supply of our finest quality limestone and block stone after buying Clipsham Quarry (Medwells) in 2001 and acquiring the Clipsham Quarry Company in 2018. We’ve been granted planning permission to guarantee reserves for the next 30 years, protecting our heritage and offering peace of mind about continuity, quality and consistency for all our customers. As we develop our supply of stone, we do this sustainably, with full replanting and re-landscaping plans at both local quarries. 95% of our block stone never travels more than 20 miles to our production site. We harvest and recycle rainwater. Our by-products (aggregate and agricultural lime) actively help to minimise waste since they are reused and recycled. So when you choose local Lincolnshire limestone, you’re buying a natural stone that’s steeped in history, quarried with love and will last forever.
